Individuals with Disabilities Face Health-Care Crisis
Tennessee Citizen Action’s Kris Murphy joins with the Tennessee Disability Coalition’s Courtney Jenkins-Atnip to give the next governor some good-government suggestions for the disability community. Here’s an excerpt of their Tennessean editorial:
While it seems the task of fixing Tennessee’s health-care system might be daunting, there are tools that would ensure that individuals with disabilities and their families could rejoin the work force and have access to a better health-care system.
One major step our next governor can take to make sure that Tennesseans have the opportunity to find good-paying jobs is to reopen the Medicare Spend Down category.
This will successfully keep individuals with disabilities out of emergency rooms and other more costly health-care alternatives.
Spend Down works by permitting an individual to qualify for Medicaid if the person spends so much on medical care that it drives their remaining income below the thresholds to qualify for Medicaid.
