Individuals with Disabilities Face Health-Care Crisis

Tennessee Disability Coalition LogoTennessee Citizen Action’s Kris Murphy joins with the Tennessee Disability Coalition’s Courtney Jenkins-Atnip to give the next governor some good-government suggestions for the disability community. Here’s an excerpt of their Tennessean editorial:

While it seems the task of fix­ing Tennessee’s health-care sys­tem might be daunt­ing, there are tools that would ensure that indi­vid­u­als with dis­abil­i­ties and their fam­i­lies could rejoin the work force and have access to a bet­ter health-care system.

One major step our next gov­er­nor can take to make sure that Ten­nesseans have the oppor­tu­nity to find good-paying jobs is to reopen the Medicare Spend Down cat­e­gory.
This will suc­cess­fully keep indi­vid­u­als with dis­abil­i­ties out of emer­gency rooms and other more costly health-care alternatives.

Spend Down works by per­mit­ting an indi­vid­ual to qual­ify for Med­ic­aid if the per­son spends so much on med­ical care that it dri­ves their remain­ing income below the thresh­olds to qual­ify for Medicaid.
