Today is Flag Day so consider for a moment the words of our first president to fly the stars and stripes, George Washington:

“The bosom of America is open to receive not only the opulent and respectable stranger, but the oppressed and persecuted of all nations and religions, whom we shall welcome to a participation of all our rights and privileges, if by decency and propriety of conduct they appear to merit the enjoyment.”

Also consider the words of the 43rd:

“Each June, our Nation lifts its sights to the flag that has watched over us since the days of our founding. In those broad stripes and bright stars, we see the arc of the American story — from a handful of colonies to 50 States, united and free.”

A big part of the “American Story” are our immigrants. And just as they have in our past, today’s immigrants have more than proven through their hard work and commitment to the values of our country that they “merit the enjoyment” of citizenship mentioned by Washington.

Yet, unfortunately, recent immigrants to America have often been rewarded with hardship, not citizenship. Those that already live here face the constant fear of being sent away and torn apart from their families. Those awaiting entry into the country face endless bureaucratic red tape and decades-long waiting lists, often with no foreseeable path to citizenship upon arrival.

That is why we need to fight for a commonsense immigration process that treats our nation’s immigrants as assets, not burdens, keeps families together, and offers them a reasonable path to citizenship. Citizenship should be achieved by a test of our nation’s history and government, the payment of an appropriate fee, and an oath of loyalty to our nation, not by navigating the complex and overly inefficient system currently in place.

Unlike many Americans who take their citizenship for granted, you can be sure that this flag day, our nation’s newest immigrant citizens will be waving the stars and stripes with great enthusiasm and pride. But as they wave that flag, many will no doubt lament that their brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, friends, and other family members may never share in that pride.

As you lift your flag to celebrate our great nation, let’s honor the vision of our founding fathers by urging Congress to support a reasonable roadmap to citizenship for millions of Americans.
