FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TNCA PRAISES PA VOTER ID DECISION
Tennessee Citizen Action released the following statement on the Court’s decision to strike down Pennsylvania’s controversial Voter I.D. law.
We applaud the state of Pennsylvania and Commonwealth Court Judge Bernard L. McGinley for striking down this unconstitutional law. We hope this will serve as an example to citizens and lawmakers of Tennessee, that Voter ID laws serve no purpose, other than to disenfranchise minorities, students, seniors and the working poor. “Instead of protecting the fundamental right to vote, the current law in Tennessee has made it clear that only certain people have the right to express their civic duty.” Stated Matt Mullen, Executive Director of Tennessee Citizen Action. We urge Tennesseans to look at the Pennsylvania ruling as an example that these Voter I.D laws are unconstitutional and fail to provide a climate that fosters fair and free elections.”
“The right to vote is a fundamental American right. These barriers to voting are unnecessary and extraordinarily harmful to our democratic process.”
