Thanks to Senators Alexander, Corker for Supporting CHIP
Last night, the Senate passed a two-year extension of funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Tennessee Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker both voted in favor of this important funding extension. We appreciate the affirmative votes of our two Senators on this fundamental health security legislation. The extension passed with bipartisan support. We are happy to see Republicans and Democrats come together to support health care and coverage for children – what happened on CHIP in Washington should set an example for our own state legislature to put partisanship aside and focus on the health and well-being of Tennesseans. Providing health care and coverage to our country’s next generation is not only a moral imperative and responsibility, but a smart investment in the economic security of working families, communities, and our nation.
Tennessee Citizen Action engaged citizens across the state to show their support for CHIP. Specifically, our members petitioned Senator Alexander to ask him to support the CHIP extension and engaged in a social media campaign directed at Senator Alexander on the day of the vote. We will continue the work of demonstrating to our Congressional leaders that the public will not stand for cuts to this program. We are pleased to see that our efforts contributed to renewed funding for CHIP and we will continue our work to ensure that all children and adults have access to quality, affordable health care.
