Tennessee Public Education Coalition Opposing the Secretary of Education Nominee

Representatives from various groups such as MNEA, SOCM, TREE and other teachers, parents, and

students will come together to show their support for our public schools and call on our legislators to vote NO regarding the confirmation of Betsy Devos, the U.S. Secretary of Education nominee.

NASHVILLE – Please join us for a press conference highlighting the many reasons that legislators should vote against the U.S. Senate confirmation of Betsy DeVos, Secretary of Education nominee. The person selected to manage and form policy about public education should be highly qualified and experienced in the issues affecting our students, teachers, and schools. Ms. DeVos has been described by nearly everyone in the education community as thoroughly unqualified and potentially detrimental to the public education system that over 85% of children in this nation depend on. Through her financial influence, she has managed to turn nearly 80% of Michigan’s charter schools into private, for profit businesses. These businesses have continued to stay open year after year despite their abysmal results compared to public schools. DeVos has shown by her inability to answer basic questions about education and related federal laws during last week’s confirmation hearing.
