Health Care Vote Tomorrow — ACT NOW!

From our friends at Tennessee Justice Center:

Leadership in the House of Representatives has indicated that they have enough votes to pass the American Health Care Act (AHCA), and they are pushing hard for a vote in the House on the AHCA tomorrow (Thursday May 4).
Here is what you need to know:
  • Congress is continuing to engage in backroom vote-trading to get more Representatives to support the bill. The Upton-Long amendment would allegedly provide a small additional premium subsidy to certain people with pre-existing conditions, and this amendment has made the AHCA more likely to pass in the House.
  • However, the Upton-Long amendment is not a solution. Allocating $62 per person to the estimated 129 million people in the US with pre-existing conditions in this country is an insult, not a solution. The AARP tweeted that they still oppose the AHCA and that the Upton-Long amendment is just a “$8 billion giveaway to insurance companies; won’t help majority of those w/preexisting conditions.” Click here to read a blog post that TJC’s Chris Coleman wrote on high-risk pools and why the Upton-Long amendment is not a solution.
  • The AHCA is still worse than ever before. It drops the coverage guarantee for people with pre-existing conditions, guts the requirement that health care plans cover basic health care services (“essential health benefits”), strips coverage from at least 24 million Americans, and drives up costs for millions more. Also, the AHCA still decimates Medicaid with more than $800 billion in cuts that will hurt seniors, people with disabilities and children like Jimmy Kimmel’s son whom he so eloquently spoke of just yesterday.
