Statement on Senate Health Care Legislation

Statement of TNCA Executive Director Andy Spears on U.S. Senate Health Care Legislation

Tennessee families and communities are better off now that the immediate threat of the Better Care Reconciliation Act is gone. Sadly, we had to depend on leadership from Senators in states like Kansas, Utah, and West Virginia as our own Senators Alexander and Corker had indicated their support for the BCRA.

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that 22 million Americans, including some 600,000 Tennesseans, would have lost health insurance under the provisions of the BCRA. Unfortunately, Alexander and Corker were on-board with this plan.

The good news is that the BCRA is off the table. Even better, the plan to just repeal the Affordable Care Act and wait for two years to replace it — a plan that would leave even more families without insurance — also appears doomed.

However, Mitch McConnell is rumored to be considering scheduling a vote on outright repeal in the near future.

Our message is clear: Senator Alexander and Corker must stand up for Tennessee families and oppose any vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Congressman Jim Cooper has urged bipartisan cooperation to improve the ACA and move our nation forward. Alexander and Corker should signal their support of this suggestion and move quickly to build a bipartisan plan that will work for Tennessee and our nation.
