Today is the day! A message from our friends at Tennessee Justice Center:

The Senate plans to vote today around 2:15 ET (1:15 CT) on whether or not to consider versions of a bill that would repeal the Affordable Care Act and restructure our health care system in devastating ways. Your voice has never mattered more. Please call Senators Alexander and Corker today.

This afternoon (July 25), Senator McConnell is expected to raise the procedural “motion to proceed” vote in the Senate. If this vote passes, the Senate will begin debating various versions of the bill that would repeal the Affordable Care Act and radically cut Medicaid. If the vote in the Senate passes today, then we could see the repeal of the ACA, gutting of Medicaid, and the reckless restructuring of one-sixth of the U.S. economy within a matter of days.
Things are looking bad:
  • As the Senate Democrats are unanimously against the efforts to repeal the ACA, the Senate Republicans (who make up 52 of the 100 Senate seats) can only afford to lose 3 votes. (If the vote is tied 50-50, Vice President Pence will break the tie.) So far, Senator Collins is the only Republican who has said she will vote no on the vote today.
  • Senator McCain, who had surgery earlier this month to remove a blood clot and was tragically diagnosed with brain cancer, will be flying to DC for the vote today. If Senator McCain hadn’t returned to DC, it would have been difficult to get the necessary 50 votes to pass the vote today.
Your voice matters. Today, please call Senators Alexander (615-736-5129)and Senator Corker (615-279-8125).

One of the most reckless and irresponsible things about today’s vote is that the Senate doesn’t even know what direction they’re going if/when the voting on proposals start today. Senator Paul even wondered aloud to reporters, “What are we proceeding to?”
If the vote today passes, it is possible that the Senate will begin discussing and amending the House-passed ACA repeal bill. Then it’s possible that there would be a proposal to substitute the House bill with a “repeal and delay” bill, which means repealing the ACA without a replacement. Or the Senate could vote on one of several proposals to replace the ACA. But the bottom line is – none of the plans are acceptable or can be fixed.
