Beyond ACA: Next Steps in Healthcare

The Senate will return from August recess after Labor Day and Tennessee’s Lamar Alexander has promised that his HELP (Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions) Committee will be holding hearings on next steps in the healthcare debate.

In preparation for these hearings, Tennessee Citizen Action hosted Dr. Carol Paris, President of Physicians for a National Healthcare Program, for an informational discussion on moving toward a single-payer system.

The bottom line is this: The Affordable Care Act has provided access to health insurance for millions of Americans and more than 200,000 Tennesseans. Individuals with pre-existing conditions are no longer unable to buy insurance. Healthcare inflation has slowed, but is still too high.

Paris discussed types of single-payer systems that would expand coverage: Every American would have coverage, period. Additionally, moving to such a program would result in significant savings. An expanded risk pool — a pool including all Americans — would be one with lower costs.

Paris noted that American spends more per person on healthcare than any other developed nation, yet our healthcare outcomes lag behind other nations.

As the healthcare debate heats up again after Labor Day, it’s important to let Senator Alexander know we want real solutions moving forward.
