Consumer Group Calls on Blackburn to Return Drug Money

“If Blackburn cares about Tennessee families, she’ll return this money and join the fight against our state’s opioid epidemic”

(Nashville, TN) – Consumer advocacy group Tennessee Citizen Action today called on U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn to return campaign contributions from big drug companies in light of reports she co-sponsored legislation making it more difficult to crack down on the opioid crisis.

“Tennessee is among the states facing an opioid abuse crisis,” said Tennessee Citizen Action executive director Andy Spears. “Our state is working to fight this problem, but Marsha Blackburn chose to do the work of big drug companies instead of looking out for Tennessee families.

The report noted Blackburn took $120,000 in contributions from the pharmaceutical industry while working to pass this law.

“If Marsha Blackburn cares about Tennessee families, she’ll return this money and join the fight against the state’s opioid epidemic,” Spears said. “Consumers deserve to know our Members of Congress are fighting for them, not making it easier for drug companies to poison them.”

In response to the report, Blackburn released a statement claiming a history of fighting against the opioid epidemic and suggesting more congressional oversight.

“It’s pretty tough to take Rep. Blackburn seriously when she was one of 9 co-sponsors of this enabling legislation and she’s taken over $100,000 from the industry,” Spears said. “If she wants to demonstrate that she’s on the side of Tennessee consumers, she should return the money. I’m sure Governor Haslam and Tennessee’s law enforcement community would appreciate her taking this clear, decisive action.”
