#TrumpTaxScam Threatens Healthcare

They’re not done yet. While a strong group of citizen activists from around the country beat back repeal of the Affordable Care Act, Trump’s team is now trying to use tax policy to dismantle the health law.

Our friends at Tennessee Justice Center have more:

The tax proposal moving through Congress right now would irresponsibly add $1.5 TRILLION to the national debt. Congressional leaders say they will make up that deficit with massive future cuts to Medicare and Medicaid.
The tax reform bill passed the House Ways and Means Committee today and could pass the House as early as next week. The Senate will take it up after Thanksgiving recess and hopes to have it on President Trump’s desk by Christmas.
The tax reform bill would:
  • Add $1.5 trillion to the deficit, squeezing many vital programs
  • Benefit the wealthiest Americans at the expense of ordinary, working families
  • Cause people to lose health coverage
President Trump and some leaders are pushing to include repeal of the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act in the tax proposal. That would increase premiums, undermine private insurance, and increase the number of uninsured. The Congressional Budget Office estimates repealing the individual mandate would raise individual market premiums by 20 percent and increase the number of Americans without health insurance by 15 million.
While Congress is working on the tax bill to benefit the extremely wealthy, it is ignoring urgent health bills benefiting millions of ordinary Americans. These include bills that would providing funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and community health centers, and the Alexander-Murray insurance stabilization bill.  The Alexander-Murray bill, of which Senator Corker is also a co-sponsor, is the kind of policy that we are proud our Senators are working on. This tax bill would prevent it from moving forward.
What can you do?
Please reach out to Senators Alexander and Corker with the following messages:
  • Don’t use the tax bill to add to the deficit.
  • Don’t use the tax bill to take health coverage away from Tennesseans.
  • Don’t use the tax bill to shift wealth from ordinary Americans to the wealthiest members of our country.
