Tennesseans Say “No Thanks” to Tax Proposal that Guts Medicaid and adds to Deficit to Pay for Massive Corporate Tax Giveaway

Current Tax Bill Leaves 13 Million Uninsured, Raises Premiums and Raises Taxes on Working Families to Give Permanent Tax Breaks to Corporations and Millionaires

(Nashville, TN) – Tennessee health care activists and concerned citizens today called on Senators Alexander and Corker to reject the latest Senate tax bill that repeals part of the ACA in order finance an huge, permanent tax cut for multi-national corporations like Apple, Pfizer, Wells Fargo and others. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) predicts that the bill would result in 13 million more uninsured people and premium increases of up to 10% for millions of people if the bill becomes law.

The $1.4 trillion dollar package gives people with incomes over $1 million an annual tax cut of about $14,890 and those with incomes of over $3.1 million an annual cut of about $94,540 annually. The federal budget resolution passed last month also allows Republicans to cut $1.5 trillion from Medicaid and Medicare next year to pay for these massive tax breaks.

“This bill is a scam, not ‘reform’,” said Andy Spears, executive director of Tennessee Citizen Action. “Cutting Medicaid, Medicare, education, and taking away important deductions that help working families save money on their tax bills doesn’t help families and giving tax breaks to the big multi-national corporations doesn’t create jobs. This bill helps the rich get richer while the rest of us pay for it.

Tuesday’s Thanksgiving-themed action recalled ways the ACA, Medicaid and Medicare have improved lives and called on Alexander and Corker to say, “No Thanks!” to any bill that cuts health care, repeals the ACA and raises taxes on working families to pay for tax breaks for millionaires and working families.

“Republican donors, millionaires and Wall Street CEOs will have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season if this bill passes, while the rest of us struggle with higher health insurance costs, cuts to Medicaid, Medicare and education and bigger tax bills—all to pay for huge tax breaks for the people who need them least,” said Spears. “This bill is a bad deal for Tennessee families.”

Activists called on Tennessee’s two Senators to reject the “Trump Tax Turkey,” which is expected to come up for a vote following this week’s Congressional recess. In addition to reviving ACA repeal that the Senate has already rejected numerous times, the bill forces devastating cuts to Medicaid, ending its guarantee of coverage for children, seniors, and people with disabilities by taking coverage from up to 1.5 million Tennesseans.

“This bill is a gluttonous giveaway of tax payer money and resources to millionaires and multi-national corporations,” said Spears. It violates every principle of responsible spending and every moral and value that we celebrate on holidays like Thanksgiving. The bill starves families of healthcare, education and income so that the rich and corporations can gorge themselves on more tax breaks. The only thing that increases is the deficit. Higher taxes, cuts to healthcare, and a bigger deficit are all reasons Senators Alexander and Corker must vote no and reject this rotten tax turkey.”
