Cheers and Jeers as Senators Corker, Alexander Split on Tax Scam

Senate-passed bill would gut Medicare, Medicaid to give tax cuts to wealthy, corporations

(Nashville, TN) – Christmas came early last night for big corporations and the wealthiest Americans as the U.S. Senate narrowly approved a tax package that provides big cuts to those at the top. Meanwhile, middle class Tennesseans will be left with coal in their stockings if the plan supported by Senator Lamar Alexander becomes law.

“Senator Bob Corker is to be commended for voting no on this bill that ultimately raises taxes on middle class Tennesseans, cuts health care programs, and explodes the deficit,” said Tennessee Citizen Action executive director Andy Spears. “Corker stood his ground despite fierce opposition from his partisan colleagues and big donors.

“Unfortunately, Senator Alexander failed to exhibit such courage. Either that, or he actually supports a plan that would increase the number of uninsured Tennesseans while also ensuring huge premium spikes in the health insurance market for everyone.

Spears noted that policy experts have predicted dire consequences as a result of the repeal of the individual mandate included in last night’s bill.

Repealing the mandate would drive up premiums by 10 percent in 2019 and lead to 13 million fewer people having health insurance by 2025. A Congressional Budget Office (CBO) report also revealed that the similar House version of the tax bill would result in $25 billion in cuts to Medicare in fiscal year 2018 and hundreds of billions of dollars of cuts to the program overall. Taken as a whole, the tax bill would not only increase taxes for millions of middle-class families but would also have disastrous effects on people’s health care.

The Center for American Progress also notes that Tennessee would see $500 million in cuts to Medicaid under the plan.

“This bill is a scam, not ‘reform’,” Spears said. “Cutting Medicaid, Medicare, education, and taking away important deductions that help working families save money on their tax bills doesn’t help families and giving tax breaks to the big multi-national corporations doesn’t create jobs. This bill helps the rich get richer while the rest of us pay for it.

“It’s a shame that Lamar Alexander supported a plan that would have such a devastating impact on Tennessee families. He can and should correct this by voting no on any final conference committee report that includes cuts to Medicaid and Medicare and middle class tax hikes.

You can’t get any lower than robbing from seniors, kids, and working families to give the richest 1 percent more perks, but that’s exactly what the Tax Scam supported by Alexander does – it gives an enormous tax break to the super-rich and big corporations and sticks everyone else with the bill. It does this by repealing part of the ACA, slashing Medicaid and Medicare, and taking away deductions the middle-class depends on in the tax code.
