CONSUMER PROTECTION — Tennessee Citizen Action fights for the rights of all Tennessee consumers by communicating, networking and serving as a voice for citizens across the state and strives to deter unfair or abusive business practices that affect Tennesseans. In recent history we helped to pass the Tennessee Home Loan Protection Act, the first legislation regulating the predatory lending practices of mortgage lenders. TNCA continues to be the consumer watch dog for the great state of Tennessee.
CIVIL JUSTICE – Tennessee Citizen Action fights for the defense of human and civil rights by advocating for the protection of free speech and the eradication of discrimination and prejudice. Tennessee Citizen Action maintains that a trial by a jury of one’s peers is an American right guaranteed by the 7th Amendment of the Constitution and should be protected. “Representative government and trial by jury are the heart and lungs of liberty. Without them we have no other fortification against being ridden like horses, fleeced like sheep, worked like cattle, and fed and clothed like swine and hounds.” – John Adams, 1774.
PATIENTS’ RIGHTS – We believe medical patients are entitled to the best quality health care and that the solution to medical malpractice is actually eliminating medical error, more effective discipline for the few bad doctors, alleviating the critical shortage of nurses, and pressuring the State of Tennessee to protect rural hospitals. We oppose limitations on legal remedies to hold medical professionals, hospitals and nursing homes accountable for their mistakes.
AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE — Tennessee Citizen Action supports safe, adequate and affordable health care for all citizens and endorses programs and initiatives which will provide wider coverage options for children, families, individuals with disabilities and seniors. We have been at the forefront of efforts to reform the prescription drug program operated through Medicare to eliminate penalties and gaps in coverage and allow the government to negotiate with the drug companies for better prices.
ECONOMIC JUSTICE – Today working and middle class families are getting crushed while the richest are getting richer and corporations cut our wages and benefits and ship our jobs overseas. We work to push our government to work for all Americans, not just the rich and powerful. At Tennessee Citizen Action, we are fighting to take back our country and rebuild the dream – good jobs and a strong economy, with liberty and justice for all. Balancing the budget must not be done on the backs of working Tennesseans.
WORKPLACE JUSTICE — Tennessee Citizen Action believes strongly in ensuring that working Americans can care for themselves and their families through the right to organize, an effective and equitable workers’ compensation program, a higher minimum wage as a step toward a truly livable wage, and workplace safety standards. We understand the valuable role unions have played in protecting the state’s most valuable resource – working people and their families. We know that without unions there would be no middle-class and access to the American Dream would be a limited commodity.
POPULAR EMPOWERMENT — Tennessee Citizen Action continues to engage in activities as will promote democracy and social well-being and believes in the power of citizens acting from the grassroots level. Our efforts range from helping to ensure smart and efficient government that works for all Tennesseans to advocating for secure and fair elections and unencumbered access to the ballot box for all. We work in a variety of coalitions to support social justice and advance the rights of the disabled, the economically disadvantaged, ethnic minorities, and working Americans. Tennessee Citizen Action works with its coalition partners for a reduction in corporate and special interest influence over our elected officials and the electoral process, politicians should have to do more than just buy your vote . We coordinated one of Tennessee’ largest non-partisan get-out-the-vote programs in the most recent elections and urge all citizens to get informed on what’s happening throughout our state.
